Legacy System virtualization

Are You Too Old for a Career in Web Development?

United Business Solutions has been a leader in Australia and New Zealand protecting Legacy VAX, Sun Solaris, HP and AlphaServer systems, originally shipped by Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC, Compaq, and Hewlett Packard (HP) and Sun Microsystems.

With an estimated 10,000 production VAX, Alpha and Sun systems still in operation in Australia and New Zealand, our professional services have migrated over 350 systems to Windows and Linux host platforms. We bring to each project current OpenVMS, Tru64 UNIX, HP MP/e, HP-UX and Solaris technical skills.

Our virtual Legacy Hardware software runs on any industry standard server, with customers using IBM, HP Proliant, Dell and Sun X86 servers as hosts.

An increasing number of our projects are targeting Red Hat Linux as a host operating system, and Oracle Virtual Box, VMware and Hyper-V to replace traditional physical X86 host platforms.

The software used is from Stromasys SA in Geneva, who are the authors of the VAX/VMS, Alpha and Sun Solaris Emulator software.

The result of each project has been long term protection of the end users business critical application, end user access techniques, networking, storage layout and data base.

All OpenVMS, Tru64, HP3000, HP9000 and Solaris commands operate unchanged

The Charon software from Stromasys emulates hardware. The software is not aware of what is going on above it, and simply delivers industry standard X86 instructions to the new host environment.

OpenVMS, Tru64, HP3000, HP9000 and Solaris migrations take days rather than months, without loss of integrity or need to retrain users or retest applications.

All legacy hardware can be retired saving substantial rack space, power consumption, cooling costs and a significant reduction in skills required to operate this new environment.

All legacy systems can be replaced to deleiver the same or more performance than the original physical legacy system.

Sun Sparc Emulator software from Stromasys support both 32 bit and 64 bit platforms.

One of the key benefits of this virtual environment is that modern devices such as Solid State Disks (SSD), and PCI-X RAID Cards can be used to substantially accelerate all I/O operations, something not supported on the legacy physical environment.

FAQ This Service

Why do legacy systems still exist? Simply because they are hard to replace, especially if they power important business processes in an organization. The risk of changing the status quo may be too high if you take into account the possibility of key data getting lost or corrupted.
Efficiency is another legacy software advantage. Some legacy systems, despite being old and outdated, still work perfectly fine. And most importantly, these systems are typically designed for maximum capacity and remain reliable and durable in most cases.
Legacy systems may also be unreliable or vulnerable to attacks. Upgrading or replacing a legacy system can help to improve reliability and reduce the risk of hackers exposing vulnerabilities. Legacy systems may also be difficult to use.
